Helping Hands Get A Big Hand At The Smith Center

Thursday, July 7, 2016.

It was a very special day in a special week. The week was National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 10-16. The special day was April 11, and featured a brunch in Cabaret Jazz in honor of 43 Smith Center volunteers. Honorees enjoyed entertainment, prizes and a custom-designed pin.

This annual recognition of volunteers, and their contributions to The Smith Center, cannot be understated. It is an acknowledgement of their dedication and commitment to the community.

Volunteers provide usher services; serve as community ambassadors by attending various events and festivals; assist staff members in administrative duties; provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation; and act as tour guides/docents.

Among the long time volunteers are Claudia Newbury (who has the most volunteer hours at 2,264!); Larry Leblanc (featured in the “Heart of the Arts Year in Review” Booklet), and Steve Smith, a full-time volunteer, who never stops encouraging people to help. “Give it a try. The staff here is great. They’re always very supportive,” says Smith. He adds, “It’s a good place to come and have fun.”

Claudia, Larry and Steve, along with another extraordinary volunteer, Kathy Healy, were recipients of The President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2015.

As these volunteers can attest, there’s a satisfaction from volunteering at The Smith Center that goes beyond involvement in helping a community cultural institution. It’s meeting interesting people with a passion for the arts. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, have excellent communication and people skills, and a desire to deliver excellent customer service. The form to apply is posted here http://www.thesmithcenter.com/support-us/volunteer/

The Smith Center salutes volunteers on an annual basis. More importantly, their efforts are recognized on a daily basis by Myron G. Martin, president and general manager, and all of the executive staff. The support is clearly appreciated.

How about another hand for these helping hands?
