It wasn’t opening night on Broadway, but it felt like it was for the audience and 19 student finalists at the fourth annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards at The Smith Center.
“This program is a celebration of talent, dedication, and outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater,’ notes Myron G. Martin, president and CEO of The Smith Center. “It also honors the educators and school communities which enable these students to discover and develop their talents.”
On May 29, a panel of nine distinguished judges voted for the actor and actress who would represent Nevada in New York for National High School Musical Theatre Awards. The vote was close, so close that the judges had to break a tie!
The winners of the Dr. Keith Boman Best Actor and Best Actress Awards were Deimoni Brewington, Las Vegas Academy (performed “Mama Says” as Willard Hewitt from Footloose) and Mariah Martin, Calvary Chapel Christian School (performed “Little Girls” as Miss Hannigan from Annie). The talented students will represent Nevada by participating in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, where the The Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor is awarded annually to two grand prize winners. The Jimmy™ Award is named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theatre owner and producer.
Spotlight Winners (runners up) were Connor Freeman, Green Valley High School (performed “I Could Be That Guy” as Officer Eddie Souther from Sister Act) and Jessica Vanek, Las Vegas Academy (performed “Take Me Or Leave Me” as Maureen from Rent).
The talented and hard-working nominees came from the following Nevada high schools: Deimoni Brewington, Las Vegas Academy; Sydney Creer, Coronado High School; Mara Jade Davy, Liberty High School; Deacon Denton, Calvary Chapel Christian School; Connor Freeman, Green Valley High School; Drew Freeman, Green Valley High School; Maurice-Aime Green, Liberty High School; Nick Hicks, Silverado High School; Ahnaleisa Hodges, Centennial High School; Laura Kohut, West Career and Technical Academy; Spencer N. Manley, Centennial High School; Veronica Matthews, Bishop Gorman High School; Mariah Martin, Calvary Chapel Christian School; Christian O’Brien, Bishop Gorman High School; Jorge Ortiz, West Career and Technical Academy; Hannah Schwarz, Cheyenne High School; Jessica Vanek, Las Vegas Academy; Christina Wallace-Carter, Silverado High School; and Taylor Weber, Palo Verde High School.
This one night at The Smith Center, for these students, their teachers, school administrators and parents -- it was definitely a "Lullaby of Broadway."
