Poperatic: The Tenors Return to The Smith Center

The Tenors’ relationship with The Smith Center dates back to their attendance at the March 10, 2012 gala opening night and their own performance a week later. They returned that August to film what would become their second PBS special, Lead with Your Heart, cementing their relationship with Las Vegas’ performing arts complex. So it’s no surprise that nearly four years later they return to The Smith Center on Feb. 20, during a 70-city tour in support of their latest album, Under One Sky. Things are different now though, with the Tenors (formerly The Canadian Tenors) having achieved astronomical success since they first sang together in Reynolds Hall.

One big recent change is the four singers’ expressing themselves more as composers, having written or co-written eight songs on their 2015 CD Under One Sky. In addition to The Tenors re-imagining familiar hits and standards such as “Lean on Me,” “You Are So Beautiful” and frequent set-opener “Besame Mucho,” member Fraser Walters wrote the title track – albeit initially for the Pan Am Games. It’s become their anthem of unity that also symbolizes their increasing recognizable status as citizens of the world.

The Tenors, who formed in 2007 and were given a huge boost when producer and fellow Canadian David Foster took an interest in them, have performed in recent years at Queen Elizabeth’s 2012 Diamond Jubilee, the 2014 Stanley Cup finals and the 2014 Christmas tree lighting at the White House. Walters, Clifton Murray, Victor Micallef and Remigio Pereira have now performed on five continents with legends such as Andrea Bocelli, Elton John and Paul McCartney, validating their decision to drop “Canadian” from the name and represent as The Tenors. Their blending of pop and opera has not taken a detour though, only evolved a little bit more each time they’ve raised their voices in unison.

The Tenors perform Sat., Feb. 20 in Reynolds Hall. To purchase tickets, click here or call 702.749.2000.
