Broadway Las Vegas
Everybody remembers the famous catchphrase “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” from the original Dirty Dancing movie. Equally memorable from the quintessential ‘80s romance of beautiful Frances Houseman and handsome Johnny Castle is its incredible smash hit soundtrack. All the amazing music and action of the film version comes alive on stage in Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage, coming to The Smith Center this July 14–19.
Dirty Dancing’s songs are phenomenal and ‘broke records’ when they were featured in the 1987 film. Most memorable is “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” sung by the power pair of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. The single won the highest of awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Grammy Award for best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Written specifically for the cinematic work, it remains to this day a radio staple and favorite at events like wedding receptions.
Another contemporary hit penned specially for Dirty Dancing is Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes.” The smooth but emotive song hit #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the Adult Contemporary Tracks charts.
As the world of Dirty Dancing takes place in the summer of 1963 at a resort in the Catskill Mountains, tunes from that era are an integral part of the soundtrack – and the musical, too. “Hey! Baby” was originally sung by rockabilly pioneer Bruce Channel. A classic sing-a-long golden oldie, it reached #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the U.K. Similarly, the famous rave-up “Do You Love Me” by the soulful Contours has revved-up more than a few dance parties from the early ‘60s and beyond.
All of these works, plus 25 new songs not featured in the film, will fill Reynolds Hall with good sounds and good times!
