Lao Tizer Quartet Features Top Artists of the Music Industry
When acclaimed pianist-keyboardist-composer Lao Tizer hypes his upcoming show, he doesn’t mention how his original instrumental songs have topped Billboard charts.
He also skips over the fact that he has toured the world performing his virtuosic music — sometimes fiery, sometimes soft and transcendent, and often toe-tappingly catchy — which spans jazz, world-fusion, rock and more.
Instead, Tizer focuses on what matters most to him: his epic bandmates.
“I’ve been fortunate to keep amazing company,” Tizer says. “If the music is good, hopefully it naturally attracts great instrumentalists who want to be a part of it.”
And the current members of his Lao Tizer Quartet certainly deserve recognition.
When Tizer performs on January 13 in Myron’s at The Smith Center, his group will include: three-time Emmy-winning guitarist-composer-producer Chieli Minucci, Rolling Stone Bassist of the Year nominee Anthony Crawford, and drum legend Joel Rosenblatt from Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Tizer’s sizzling band has always stood apart by featuring such top-level musicians. And he has no trouble attracting them, as his complex, instrumental tunes appeal to highly skilled artists.
“I like improvisation, I like giving everyone time to shine, and we play all sorts of configurations, which changes the show and keeps us on our toes,” Tizer explains. “It’s the kind of stuff that instrumentalists want to play, where they get a chance to stretch and really go for it.”
All Original Music, with New Debuts
Southern Nevadans will have a chance to see these talented artists showcase their skills at the upcoming concert.
The quartet will perform all original music, including songs from Tizer’s latest album, “Songs from the Swinghouse,” which leading jazz publication JAZZIZ hailed as “a revolution in style and strategy.”
The evening will also feature some thrilling surprises, including the debut of all-new compositions for Tizer’s next music and film project.
“I’m really excited for this next project, which is a bit overdue, and it will document the continued evolution of the group,” he says. “I think audiences will really enjoy this collection of new, original music.”
Building on a Career of Success
Tizer has never failed to captivate audiences with his original tunes.
After his parents loaned him money for his first keyboard as a teenager, Tizer started busking in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado.
Performing his signature, instrumental wizardry, he was soon approached about making an album.
“It’s not like I set out on a path for (a music career) — it just fell into my lap,” he says. “I never had a job.”
Now after building a global music career, Tizer promises audiences an electrifying performance at The Smith Center.
“People can expect a high-energy show that takes you on a musical journey of all different flavors, with a little Latin, a little funk, a little jazz, and a little world music,” Tizer says. “It will all be one delicious stew for the audience to enjoy.”
