Clark County Students Share Disney Musicals on Stage

Education and Outreach

On the evening of March 9, Reynolds Hall was transformed into both a forest and a desert when The Smith Center’s Disney Musicals in Schools program held its 2015 Student Share Celebration.

Six high-needs elementary schools were selected through an application process last spring to participate in the second year of this prestigious program at The Smith Center. Since October, our team of Disney Musicals in Schools trained teaching artists and our Education and Outreach Department worked with more than 300 Clark County School District students and their teachers at these schools to produce their selected Disney KIDS musicals—The Jungle Book KIDS and Aladdin KIDS.

The Disney Musicals in the Schools programs uses the magic of Disney musicals to address imagination, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills and other classroom learning goals in after-school settings.

After months of rehearsing, the students performed live – in costume – for an audience of some 800 parents and family members on Southern Nevada’s premier stage in Reynolds Hall. As a special treat, the night was emceed byMark Shunock, star of Rock of Ages here in Las Vegas.

It was perfect to have Shunock emcee the show, as he spent two years on tour as Timon in Disney’s The Lion King, for which he earned a 2009 Helen Hayes Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Robert Lunt Elementary opened the evening with Jungle Prologue. This was followed by Kermit R. Booker Sr. Elementary’s Arabian Nights; I Wan’na Be Like You by Ruby Thomas Elementary; Friend Like Me by Dean Petersen Elementary and The Battle by Rose Warren Elementary. The wonderful show ended with Finale by Fay Herron Elementary.
