The Phantom, Christine Daaé and Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny might be the three lead roles in beloved musical Phantom of the Opera, but audiences also leave theaters raving about the part played by “Gillian.”
She’s the ornate chandelier at the center of the show’s spectacular scenography. And without spoiling any secrets to come, she’ll take your breath away.
Here are some fun facts about “Gillian,” ahead of Phantom of the Opera’s October 21-November 1 run at The Smith Center in Las Vegas:
-
She weighs more than a ton (2000 pounds), stands more than 8 feet tall and spans nearly 11 feet wide.
-
She’s covered in 24-karat gold leaf.
-
She’s hung with more than 20,000 beads.
-
She was fabricated by Howard Eaton Lighting, LTD. of East Sussex, England.
-
She traveled to the U.S. in a custom fitted shipping container.
-
She can handle pyrotechnics, theatrical fog, motion effects and custom lighting.
-
She was named “Gillian” in honor of original Phantom of the Opera choreographer Dame Gillian Lynne, in celebration of her 100th birthday earlier this year.
