The Smith Center Provides Access to the Arts Through In-School Student Matinees

Education and Outreach

Student matinees inside The Smith Center’s theaters may still be on hiatus due to logistical issues, but that hasn’t stopped the center’s Education and Outreach team from bringing high quality matinee performances by local, regional, national and international artists representing a variety of arts disciplines directly to local school gymnasiums and theaters. Provided at no cost to schools, Smith Center student matinees are specifically designed for young audiences and include materials to support arts-based classroom curriculum.

Recently, the center arranged for students to enjoy “Secrets of Space,” the new international touring production from Belfast-based theater company Cahoots NI. Developed with leading space industry experts, “Secrets in Space” explores the wonders of outer space through dazzling imagery and discussion about key ideas and inventions in science, technology and engineering. Using magical illusions, “Secrets of Space” follows sisters “Suni” and “Mae” as they take an interactive journey across the galaxy. During the show’s run, members of its cast and crew also participated in a classroom master class to share professional advice and experiences with acting and musical theater students.
