Performances and Artists

When Broadway veteran Heidi Blickenstaff learned she would star in hit musical “Jagged Little Pill” for its reopening on Broadway in 2021, she almost didn’t believe it.
“I never thought something like this would happen,” Blickenstaff says of leading such a powerful musical, chronicling the struggles and healing of suburban family the Healys. “It’s wildly precious.”
Now, this magnetic actress will bring her star power across America, as she continues to play the lead role of Mary Jane Healy for the “Jagged Little Pill” national tour.
This acclaimed production features the electrifying hits of music icon Alanis Morissette — whose album “Jagged Little Pill” remains one of the top-selling records in history — on top of a Tony-winning book by Oscar winner Diablo Cody.
Starring in “Jagged Little Pill” feels “thrilling and unbelievable,” says Blickenstaff, who previously originated the role of Bea in Broadway hit “Something Rotten,” earning her a Grammy nomination. She also costarred in “The Little Mermaid” and “The Addams Family.”
Blickenstaff especially enjoys channeling the intense emotions of Morissette’s songs, like “You Oughta Know,” “Ironic,” “Hand In My Pocket” and more.
“I feel like this is the coolest show I’ve ever been in,” she says. “It’s been a really liberating experience to be this raw and vulnerable on stage.”
A Personal Connection
Blickenstaff deeply connects to the musical’s storyline following the Healy family members, who face significant crises such as trauma and drug addiction.
She understands these sensitive issues well, she says, as she personally survived assault, and a close family member has grappled with addiction.
“I’ve never taken this personal of a deep dive (with a role),” she says. “The rehearsal process was unlike any role I’ve ever played, because I didn’t have to invent anything. I just had to draw on my own experience, and that was certainly cathartic and very healing.”
A Star-Studded Cast
Blickenstaff won’t be the only acclaimed performer in the national tour.
She will share the stage with charismatic Broadway star Chris Hoch, playing her husband Steve Healy. Hoch’s commanding vocals have led him to costar in numerous Broadway hits, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Matilda the Musical,” “Shrek the Musical” and more.
Blickenstaff feels honored to lead this show’s cast, she says.
“It’s overwhelming to me,” she says. “When I walk out there every night, I’m so grateful for this moment.”
An Empowering Story
Blickenstaff lauds how “Jagged Little Pill” tackles weighty themes that impact many families across America.
“I think revisiting Mary Jane’s story every night continues to embolden me to be brave about my own story, and share it with others,” she says.
She hopes the musical will resonate with audience members, and inspire them to find their own healing journeys.
“I feel we always open ourselves up to healing when we tell the truth,” she says.
