Season Supporter UMC Raises Money for Continued Enhancements to its Children’s Hospital

Supporting the Arts

For close to a century, University Medical Center (UMC) has served as a nonprofit public hospital offering Nevada’s highest level of care. And UMC Children’s Hospital stands as a pillar of hope in the community, providing highly specialized care for many of Nevada’s most critically ill and injured children. The Smith Center is thankful for UMC’s role as one of our Season Supporters, and we are happy to highlight their work in the community. Please read on to learn more.

On October 13, UMC held its annual UMC Foundation Evening of Hope Gala at Paris Las Vegas, raising more valuable funds to benefit UMC Children’s Hospital, which is home to Nevada’s only Designated Pediatric Trauma Center and only Verified Pediatric Burn Center. Open since 1931 and known as University Medical Center beginning in 1986, UMC opened its Trauma and Pediatric Children’s Hospital in 1992. In 2009, that facility and UMC’s Pediatric Emergency Department were combined to form UMC Children’s Hospital.

Today, UMC Children’s Hospital offers a number of patient-focused therapy programs, including:

  • Canine Comfort, in which a highly trained team of certified therapy dogs and their handlers provide emotional and motivational support to patients.

  • Music Therapy. UMC is developing a dedicated space in which local entertainers can perform for patients and their families.

  • Diversion Therapy. UMC Children’s Hospital offers a Pediatric Playroom – including toys, games, crafts, a jukebox and state-of-the-art sensory equipment – to provide young patients with a sense of normalcy during their hospital stays. The UMC Lions Burn Care Center also recently opened a new playroom for long-term pediatric burn patients, featuring video game consoles, a craft station and books.

We hope you’ll join us in a collective round of applause to UMC for their partnership and role as a Season Supporter of The Smith Center.
