‘Stereophonic’ Brings the Magic – And Drama – Of ’70s Rock to the Stage

Remember when rock ruled the radio? It was never truer than in the 1970s, when electric guitars and magical voices dominated the airwaves, and bands sold out stadiums around the world.

Stereophonic, a Tony Award®-winning play onstage at The Smith Center from October 21-26, revels in that era the best way possible – by taking audiences inside a recording session as a band on the verge of superstardom lays down its potential breakthrough album.

Already sounds cool, right? And two factors make it all the more compelling.

First, the music is legitimately excellent. Artist Will Butler, renowned for his work with Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire, composed original music that truly captures the essence of a ’70s rock band. His creations recall artists from the era like Elton John and Stevie Wonder, masterfully blending authenticity and emotion.

And second, Stereophonic isn’t just about the band; it’s about the people in the band, and the interpersonal drama threatening to blow the band apart in the midst of its upward trajectory.

Lead vocalist Diana and guitarist Peter are in a long-term relationship, but it’s showing signs of unraveling. Meanwhile, bassist Joan and keyboardist Simon are a married couple within the band, but romantic tension is building between Joan and assistant engineer Reg.

It’s a spellbinding look into the world of a rock band representative of so many of our favorites from the time period, and it’s no wonder Stereophonic was not only the most Tony Award®-winning show of 2024 but also the most Tony®-nominated play of all time.
