“I stayed in teaching because there aren’t a lot of Black teachers, and there aren’t a lot of Black male teachers,” explains Lang, technology teacher with Laura Dearing Elementary School. “Black males in particular need to see a role model in classrooms who looks like them and dresses the way they dress, and speaks the way they speak.”

Inside the Theater
A warm and constant presence at The Smith Center, LeBlanc volunteered nearly 4,000 hours, which included ushering hundreds of shows, serving as captain of usher uniforms, leading volunteers during student matinees and giving campus tours as a docent.

Working with its myriad arts education partners across the country, the team selected, organized and presented a total of six virtual student matinees during the 2020-2021 school year. As a nonprofit, The Smith Center provided this at no cost to schools.
