Discovering The Smith Center

As the Group Sales manager for The Smith Center, Mychael Powell doesn’t exaggerate when he calls himself a performing arts expert.
A professional singer, dancer and actor for decades, Powell performed in major productions worldwide, including Tokyo, Paris, New York City and Las Vegas.
“Since I was a skinny, freckle-faced 13 year old — when I started taking dancing lessons, acting in school plays and singing in the choir — I knew this was the career for me,” he recalls.
Powell’s storied career includes performing in iconic productions such as “Donn Arden’s Jubilee!” in Las Vegas (his very first gig in the ‘80s), as well as Siegfried and Roy’s “Tsumura Illusion” that traveled to Tokyo, Osaka and New York City, where he performed in Radio City Musical Hall.
He cut his teeth in “Bravissimo” at the legendary Lido de Paris in Paris, and landed a role dancing in a prominent variety show on Rai Uno Television in Rome, Italy.
Powell also visited a total of 14 countries performing on cruise ships.
“I was an extremely shy kid who was easily intimidated by other kids, but when I started dancing I gained confidence, because I picked up the steps quickly,” says Powell. “To express myself through dancing, singing and performing, I always feel truly alive.”
After decades in the spotlight, Powell admits some reluctance in transitioning to a business career.
“I didn’t want to give up the feeling of living my dream, and the passion for dancing,” he says.
Fortunately with his job at The Smith Center, Powell doesn’t have to leave the arts behind.
In his role, Powell helps groups of 10 or more purchase tickets together for shows — which includes a variety of benefits — allowing him to still bring people the joy of live performances.
“I hope many people will consider joining us for our incredible lineup of live entertainment at our breathtaking theaters, and bring along their family and friends,” he says.
Special Perks for Groups
Powell well understands the thrill of experiencing live shows as a group.
“When my family and friends celebrate either a holiday, someone’s birthday or a special occasion, we choose to explore an activity in which we can all share a memorable experience,” he says.
So he feels very excited to help groups purchase tickets for Smith Center shows.
Anyone can purchase tickets as a group of 10 or more, including families and friends, church groups, coworkers, scout troops, community organizations and more.
Purchasing as a group includes many special perks, including:
-
Special pricing for most shows
-
Priority seating, even before tickets go on sale to the general public
-
Waived individual-ticket-service fees
-
Flexible payment terms
-
Convenient, complimentary parking provided for motor coaches and buses
-
Concierge-style, person-to-person service
-
Opportunities to add pre-show special events, such as wine tastings and dinners
Beyond these perks, Powell notes, experiencing shows as a group forges relationships and creates memories that shape people’s lives.
“Why not bring together family and friends to a live theatrical production paired with dining, for a fabulous, memorable night out that will be the topic of discussion for years?” he says. “It’s the experiences surrounded by loved ones that truly bond our relationships.”
Helping to Inspire and Connect
Many groups that have purchased tickets together laud their experiences.
The Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada provides tickets for troop members and their families, in hopes of inspiring and educating young scouts.
“It’s a little bit outside their everyday life to go to something like (a live show),” says Axa Aguilar, manager of special programs with Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada. “By being there, they might decide, ‘I want to be an actress, or a ballet dancer, or a behind-the-scenes person.’”
Many community organizations purchase tickets as a group to provide socializing opportunities for members.
“Seeing the variety of performances at The Smith Center allows our community residents to grow closer,” says C.J. Hill, lifestyle director for Siena Community Association in Summerlin. “It keeps the arts an ongoing part of their lives.”
