Like the film, the musical tells the story of a talented but volatile actor (Michael Dorsey) whose reputation for being difficult forces him to adopt a new identity as a woman (Dorothy Michaels) in order to land a job. The original movie revolved around a daytime soap opera, while the production show involves a Broadway musical.

The Intricate Process Behind Sign Language Interpretation for Broadway Shows
Weeks before “Hamilton” came to The Smith Center, Whitney Hobbs started preparing for the show. She listened obsessively to the soundtrack. She met almost daily with her coworkers to rehearse each scene. Hobbs is not an actress. She is one of the locally based, certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters providing ASL interpretation during Broadway productions.

Bringing the Blind to Broadway
Many Smith Center performances find Chanelle Carson tucked in a room at the back of Reynolds Hall, where she scrutinizes the stage through a window. Annunciating carefully, she describes everything she sees. Carson works as an audio describer, relaying the visual elements of various shows to audience members who are blind or visually impaired.
