When Kevin Spencer performs a magic trick, curiosity is instantly sparked — no matter if he’s in front of a kindergarten class or working with Parkinson’s patients. “It doesn’t make any difference if you’re 5 years old, if you’re 50 years old, if you’re 100 years old … everybody is intrigued by the seeming impossibility of a magic trick,” he says.

On May 23, The Smith Center partnered with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District on a special event at Whitney Library, featuring cast members from Hamilton, the global phenomenon that recently concluded its third run at Reynolds Hall.

Lindsey Jamieson Gilbert, Senior Manager of Programming, was named to Vegas Inc’s 2025 40 Under 40 on March 27, joining other local honorees in that week’s cover feature of Las Vegas Weekly and at an event celebrating all 40 local luminaries at the Sahara Theater.

Volunteer Spotlight: David Rodriguez

A marble mason by trade, Rodriguez figured the new project might need some help during its construction phase. “I knew it was going to be a really nice building, so tried to get on it, but they had enough guys already,” he says. “So I went to City Center and worked on Aria instead.” But The Smith Center stayed in Rodriguez’s thoughts, and when he saw a call-out for volunteers in 2011, he realized he could help out the Las Vegas valley’s new performing arts center in a different way – with his time and energy.

A New Starbucks Blooms at The Smith Center, With a Colorful Jolt From a Local Muralist

“Super Bloom,” the mural that fills the northeast wall inside the new Starbucks at The Smith Center, brings a welcoming, bright and colorful vibe to a space set to become a meeting place for creative types from Downtown Las Vegas and beyond. The new Starbucks, adjacent to the Discovery Children’s Museum and The Smith Center courtyard, opened its doors in September, with a grand-opening celebration set for November 12. The store offers all your favorite Starbucks’ beloved drinks, bites and treats, along with an eight-seat community table that can be reserved for free for two hours at a time.

Virtual Workshop Addresses Challenges of Distance Learning for Students with Disabilities

Smith Center educational consultant Jenna Gabriel doesn’t sugarcoat how screen-based learning poses enormous challenges for students with disabilities. “The unilateral nature of screen-based learning can be extremely difficult for students with high-incidence disabilities like learning and attention issues, and even traumatic for students with autism who find their regular routines disrupted,” Gabriel says.
