With a little imagination, some common household items and inspiration from children’s books, the two teachers, both regular participants in The Smith Center’s Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards (NVHSMTA), helped their students to develop virtual puppet performances specifically aimed at young audiences.

While The Smith Center’s stages remain silent during Black History Month, the messages of passionate Black artists who performed there still ring loud. Many performers skillfully adapt music, dance and theater to cultivate inclusion and educate the world about Black culture and history. When Tina Fey watched cast members rehearse the Broadway adaptation of her hit film “Mean Girls,” she says they broke her brain. “It’s like a bunch of baby Timberlakes. Everyone can do everything,” says Fey, a “Saturday Night Live” alumna and creator of hit TV comedies “30 Rock.” A cast would need more than a little talent to perform this comedy musical.

Las Vegas native Brooke Solan made her Broadway debut as a teenager because of The Smith Center. “That was actually the biggest highlight of my life,” says Solan, now a professional performer and vocal coach. “It meant that I was on the right path to achieving my lifelong dreams.”

When Smith Center teaching artist and accomplished pianist Dr. Bethany Campbell joins the Santa Monica Symphony on January 16 for a virtual solo recital celebrating Martin Luther King Day Weekend, she’ll be honoring her own African American heritage by bringing to life the music and stories of several black composers.

Discovering The Smith Center
The Smith Center, a nonprofit, board-led institution, recently added five new members to its board of directors to help it propel culture and arts education in Southern Nevada. The elected members are all esteemed regional leaders, selected to serve alongside an already impressive list of Southern Nevada civic and business innovators to guide The Smith Center during its extended closure and prepare it for a successful future.

The deadline to nominate outstanding Clark County School District teachers for consideration to be recognized at the 6th Annual Heart of Education Awards, presented by The Smith Center and powered by The Rogers Foundation, has been extended from Friday, Jan. 15, 2021 to Friday, Feb. 12, 2021 in order to allow for more time for nominations to be submitted.
