The teachers honored with The Smith Center’s sixth-annual Heart of Education Awards know a lot about overcoming challenges.
Milton Castellanos fled to the U.S. to avoid being drafted by the Communist army in Nicaragua. He worked several years in manual labor before he could gain permanent residence, in order to complete his education and become a teacher.

Educators play a vital role in their students’ wellbeing, but the demand on teachers during the shifting status quo of the pandemic remains unprecedented.
That’s why Smith Center educational consultant Mary Hall Surface recently led the center’s second virtual, arts-integration workshop for Clark County School District (CCSD) teachers, “Self-Awareness and Resilience Through Writing and Art.”

Persevering to recognize the achievements of students in Nevada’s high school musical theater programs in spite of the pandemic, The Smith Center will host a limited virtual competition of the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards (NVHSMTA) program in the spring of 2021.

Black Violin’s classical-meets-hip hop duo uses their unique blend of music to overcome stereotypes while encouraging people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers.

With a little imagination, some common household items and inspiration from children’s books, the two teachers, both regular participants in The Smith Center’s Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards (NVHSMTA), helped their students to develop virtual puppet performances specifically aimed at young audiences.

When Smith Center teaching artist and accomplished pianist Dr. Bethany Campbell joins the Santa Monica Symphony on January 16 for a virtual solo recital celebrating Martin Luther King Day Weekend, she’ll be honoring her own African American heritage by bringing to life the music and stories of several black composers.

Discovering The Smith Center
The deadline to nominate outstanding Clark County School District teachers for consideration to be recognized at the 6th Annual Heart of Education Awards, presented by The Smith Center and powered by The Rogers Foundation, has been extended from Friday, Jan. 15, 2021 to Friday, Feb. 12, 2021 in order to allow for more time for nominations to be submitted.
